its time to straighten out some facts. you simply bought old inventory, they were nice enough to give you the panther discs or you would have to paid 20 more dollars. all new macs come with iflife, if its not installed on your machine when you buy it you can purchase ilife for 20 dollars. you said it yourself its not the end of the world, so why not leave it at that.

What I am seeing is that we are getting less and less over the years. Remember when .Mac was "free for life"?

I understand that the 30$ might only be to cover shipping but I was at the store. Why not give the iLife update with the computer? If Apple is not making any money with this up-to-date program, why bother the customers with it?
i think apple is sending out some cd's to places, thats what i hear but im honestly not sure. i can understand apple doing the .mac thing. It is well worth the 100 dollars and when you buy a mac you save 30, making it even better. i would only be a little upset if apple raised prices of current products, but i cant really complain when they take kick ass software like ilife and sell it for a measly 50 dollars.

My god...

Twenty dollars? Gimme a break. He said iLife '04 is free with every NEW mac, not every single mac in every single store at that second. You really should look at how big business deals with inventory before you get upset that every single box has not been reopened and reformatted with everything you want...

What? According to you, Steve Jobs was explicitly referring to macs leaving the factory when he mentioned "new macs"? I can't believe it!

Actually, there is a petition online against Apple: the warranty starts ticking when the macs leave the factory:

"Apple Computer, Inc. consistently registers products at dates that are no where near the actual purchase date, but instead closer to either their initial shipping or manufacture date" for their own limited warranty.

bull s***. ill belive it when i see it. I have never seen apple do that before nor will i be lead to think that.

Bull!

When in the hell has this EVER happened? 43 ppl just sitting around thinking up conspiracy theories?

Except it wasn't iJon.

Steve said that iLife would be free with every new Mac. I can understand that they don't want to reformat each new computer and install iLife, but they should slip the DVD into the box so that you can install it yourself.

It's really not much different from what happens here in NZ - each box is opened, and they slip a US-BT modem cable in there. They could easily do the same with an iLife DVD.

Confession...

If you are not getting iLIfe '04 for free, something is very messed up. At the Apple Store in Phoenix we opened up every box and inserted flat packs of the software for both panther and iLife '04 for free. I don't understand how other company stores get away with not doing this.

I just got off the phone from Apple, and I was told that still up to today no macs are being shipped with iLife '04. Everyone has to buy it either with the up to date program, or the raw program itself. The rep doesn't know when it will be shipped with the iLife '04

Dear sir,

Thank you for your recent e-mail to the Apple Store.

On January 6, 2004, Apple announced iLife '04, the next generation of
Apple's award-winning suite of digital lifestyle applications. The new
iLife '04 applications--iPhoto 4, iMovie 4, iDVD 4, iTunes 4.2, and
GarageBand--will begin shipping with new Macs in early February.

For a limited time, an iLife Up-To-Date upgrade package is available to all
customers who purchase a qualifying new Mac on or after January 6, 2004,
that does not include iLife '04. Find complete details about the program
here: http://www.apple.com/uk/ilife/uptodate/

I hope this answers your quiry,

Thank you.

REQUEST ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello there

I purchased a 12" powerbook G4 direct from apple - order number
W###### which shipped on 20th January, however it is missing the
latest version of iLife - iLife 04. The machine was ordered and shipped
after iLife was updated to 04 and available for purchase. I know about
the up-to-date programme, but it seems unfair to have to pay for
something that should have been included - what was said at the
keynote was that iLife 04 would be $49 or free with any new mac. I
assumed that buy ordering direct from apple I would definitely receive
this. Can you tell me how I should get this missing software?

Thanks

...time to download all that apple software I should have got.... and some extras for good measure...

i don't think this would be legal... i think there a regulation that if the box is opened, it cannot be sold as brand new.

if i buy a new computer, i'd want one that's factory sealed - not retail store sealed.

i thought this was the reason for refurbs and restocking fees...

or is the retail stores exempt from this regulation?

Stipulation...

As long as the computer is not unpacked, I believe it is okay. Only the top flaps were opened, the styrofoam inside was never disturbed.

Retailers get rw deal

I work at an apple retailer because of proximity to my house and we just today got 10 iLife '04 flat packs for out inventory of over 30 computers. I am starting to wish I worked at an apple store because they get everything super fast directly through apple without question. That and they look a whole hell of alot cooler then out store.:(

I also sent an email to Apple last week asking about this. Here is what I got back:
