iLife Media Browser and iPhoto keywords

I've tagged my whole photo library for easy searching and it works wonders while using iPhoto. However I've realized that neither Spotlight nor the integrated iLife Media Browser can parse the keywords so it seems like they are effectively useless outside of iPhoto. Any idea if this is a mistake/bug or if this is the intended idea Apple had? How about fixes in future updates?
