So i upgraded to mavericks and noticed that all the ilife apps disappeared, iPhoto etc. Do I need to pay for them this time around because on the app store they have a price tag. I am just a little confused. Guidance is appreciated thanks!

Did you do a clean install or an upgrade. Your existing apps should still be in the applications folder if you went the upgrade route.
You don't need to rebuy your apps but if apple released the new iLife apps you'll not be able to download the old versions AFAIK
