I am thinking of removing the Superdrive from these MBPros to lighten them a bit.

Late 2011 MacBook Pro 13-inch 2.8 GHz Core i7-2640M
Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 13-inch 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo P8800

Not installing a 2nd HDD caddy. So are there any ill effect of just removing them outright?

How much lighter is it really going to be / feel with it removed? I think you'll be disappointed with the slight difference and loss of function, but you can stick it back in, so why not go for it?

I don't think you'll feel much of a difference with the optical drive removed. If you could really feel a difference it would mean you computer would be horrible unbalanced and have on one side.

Yeah silly idea me thinks - No offence. The computer won't feel much lighter however it will feel unbalanced. Replace the superdrive with an SSD - I did it with my old MacBook and it was awesome.
