When I press the keyboard brightness buttons I get the icon and a circle slash showing that it isn't going to let me turn them on.

What is the problem?

P.S. I'm a mac newbie.

Nevermind, I solved the problem. In case anyone else has this problem, I found out that the ambient light sensor (located near the speakers) doesn't allow keyboard illumination unless it's pretty dark (too dark to see the keyboard).

However, if you really like the keyboard illumination and want to use it even when it's not extremely dark, you can use this application I found (which works great btw :D):

http://labtick.proculo.de/

Allows you to override Mac OS X and turn on illumination whenever (also allows hotkey assignment for turning on/off and changing brightness levels).
