Illustrator CS4 question regarding bleeds.

I am trying to apply bleeds to an existing document that was not set up with bleeds when created.

But I've done the apparent and went to file-->document setup
and added values for the bleeds. But the red bleed outline does not show up--as it does when I set bleed values for a brand new document.

Help?
