I've known (but not really used) illustrator for about 4years and there is one thing that's been bothering me.

I can use pen tools fine but I don't know how to create paths when the graphic is a bit more complicated than just shapes with perfect outlines.. like the attached file.(it's Adobe Bridge CS2 icon) If I'm only making outlines, it's fine, but to create shapes and color them later, I'm confused what to do with overlapping part. Do I make different shapes anyway? that's what I've been doing but it's a bit annoying where they overlap because it doesn't look clean.

I've tried to look for tutorials for this but all I can find is for the basic beginners pen tool tutorials. Please someone tell me how to solve this! Thank you so much in advance.
