Okay, so I have an iPhone sitting here on my desk that I really want to be able to play around with. I want to be able to activate it, but I still am under contract from Verizon for a couple months. So in the mean time I'd like to be able to play around with the iPod features and show it off to my friends.

I could use iUnlock, but I don't want to use T-Mobile or any phone service on it, will this still work? It seems like I'm reading both ways on here.

Also, I don't want to do any permanent damage to my iPhone or risk not being able to use AT&T's service in a couple months.

Somebody please reassure me!

Edit: I'm on OSX

You don't need to unlock your phone, you just need to activated. Luckily there's a hack that lets you do that without a contract with AT&T. iActivator should be able to do it for you. :)

Reading up on iActivator I see that it says:
Note that this version does not work with iTunes 7.4.

Anyone have a link to iTunes 7.3 for OS X? I can't find it!

pdpfilms, which firmware update did you use?

Right now I'm getting an 'error entering recovery mode' error.:(

1.0.2. Try rebooting the phone, restarting INdependence, and re-jaiing and re-jailbreaking the phone. And any combination of the three. Eventually it should go through.

As far as any damage, don't worry. You will do a clean install with will bring the iPhone back to what it was when you first took it out of the box.

if you only have a few months on your contract you should be able to buy it out at a pro-rated price...
