So I've still been using a 256 iphone 8, and had been deciding between a 128 ans 256 iPhone 13pro.
Ended up getting the 256 and bringing it home, transfered all my **** from phone a to phone b and than was completely shocked that it was almost full at 197 gig.

I completely spaced out that it wouldn't start from empty hahaha. If I got the 128, it would have already been too small. I should have gotten the 512 .

Tldr; did not put 2 ans 2 together that my **** from phone a to phone b would have the new phone not start from scratch.

On a side note, is there a way to clean out the content such as system stuff?

You can start from new if you want. Other than that optimize storage for photos and delete unused apps. Sometimes people download an app once and never use it again so it just takes up space

Should I get a new phone 512 or up my Icloud storage? What's more economical? I'm planning on having this phone for a few years?

How much us your monthly icloud plan? With that information you can workout if the extra cost to upgrade to the 512gb is cheaper than the monthly cost of icloud storage for a few years.

I would look at what’s on the phone, and do you need it. The cost of cloud storage will add up to more than the cost of the higher capacity over time. But if you have a lot of app/music/videos that you don’t listen to/view/use then I’d try a clear out.

Apple has a 14 day return policy? It's easy to get another phone right now? iCloud can be good if your mobile carrier plan has unlimited data? On phone storage can be good for privacy and security? And for areas with spotty cellular coverage?

Could you possibly be reading the available storage space as the amount you’re using? I’ve bought 256GB phones for several years now. I do usually start from scratch, but this year I just went ahead and transferred from old phone to new phone. I just checked and I have 198GB free space. I don’t see much point in paying for more storage. Everything is pretty much Cloud-based these days.

Are you not able to move some your less consumed **** from the phone to iCloud? At 197GB surely you are not consuming it ALL daily?

i'm deleting unused music now and will do a photodump to the MacBook. after that I'll figure it out. i don't think I've ever used that much data either.

This is what happened to me. Went from a 128gb iPhone 12. WITH about 50gb free space. To a 256gb iPhone 13 Pro Max. Used space is at 205gb. Same data and apps. BUT my 5000 odd songs downloaded as Lossless. Those on the IPhone 12 were just high quality. Can’t seem to go back.

If you’re already hitting the storage wall on a brand new phone- you got the wrong phone.
I super like iOS’s ability to uninstall programs to make more space! Granted, it doesn’t always pick the right programs, but it makes using it on a more crammed device massively easier!

I had 1 64 GB device, which was great, but my current two devices are 32 GB and I get by without too much effort thanks to that ability!

Music def is using a lot of my space on this phone. I was on lossless and turned that off for download. Trying not to download it all now because somehow the songs are still so big and that includes my own library. Guess I’m getting more storage next time.

I ended up getting the 512 and picking up tomorrow. Not sure what happened but the data has been growing and is now at 243. I'm too anxious to delete and start again so a higher phone it is. Moms paying for it (I'll just cover the gap between the 256 and the 512 as birthday/autoimmune issues (getting better) present.
