I’m thinking about switching to an Ubuntu phone if the next two iPhones don’t have headphone jacks. If I do this, I’ll need to use a different IM app than iMessage. However, most of the IM apps I’m tried have to be open to be able to receive messages.

I’m looking for an IM client which meets these criteria:
1. Available on iOS, Mac OS X, and Ubuntu Touch
2. Encrypts messages
3. Can receive messages when closed, possibly through the use of a daemon.

An open app isn't materially different to a running daemon. You will need some code running to receive messages. You may also find it worthwhile specifying which message platforms you want the app to talk to...

Whatsapp can be installed on the Ubuntu phone, then there are a couple of choices for OS X to run whatsapp.

Honestly though if they put an adaptor in the box will you still jump ship....?

1. I'll check it out!

2. Probably. I just think it's ridiculous to have to use an adapter for something as common as a headphone jack, especially considering how often it's used.
