I'm consistently terrible at predicting which watch faces I'll like

Every time they announce new watch faces it amuses me how awful I am at predicting which ones I'll like and vice versa.
  • Numerals Duo - That's hideous! Turns out it's really easy to see in AOD mode and I like the colors now. It's my go to face for meetings.
  • Solar Dial - Cool! I'll want that all the time. Turns out I can barely see the time in AOD mode.
  • California - Ew! It looks like my old Fossil watches. Turns out I kind of like the retro look and it's really easy to see in AOD mode.

My favorite is the California in black and that is the one that stays unless I'm working out. I also really like the new modular compact in plain black.

I wonder if having that in black uses less battery since the dim and bright versions are so similar. I'm using it with the blue background.

I read from somewhere in the forum that the black seems to take less battery and the white much more. I had it as the blue face too which I really like but once I went black I couldn't go back. :)
 
I can put a confirmation on that. Used the black cali screen first day, 8:30am-12:30am. Typical work day with 55% left at night before hitting the sack... Then did another day with black cali and went for a 30mins run in the morning, ended the day with 38%. Now today, I had cream cali for a day of work. Still another 2 hrs before I hit the sack, I am currently at 23%. Black background definitely saves a heck load more battery life. So keep them black if you want battery conservation.

Holy cow that is a huge difference.

Loving California with the edition colors, I have barely switched from it since Friday.

I like the fossil look, lots of memories from the early 00’s.
 
My absolute favorite is the solar graph, it's simple, modernist, yet beautiful especially on the SBSS model with AOD.
Second choice would be explorer, it's bold but not too much in your face and matches easily with most situation.
Black California is very groovy in beryl or turquoise, it looks like the dial is phosphorescent.
Finally when I'm bored and at home or on a casual date I go with custom watch face.

Where do you get faces like these? They certainly don’t come with OS 6 or with the Series 5 watch.

I was losing upwards of 10% an hour this morning with Meridian in white. At 9:15 am i had 68%. Series 4.

I switched to black. Now it's 6:15pm and I have 33%.

3h for ⅓ of the battery vs 9h for ⅓ of the battery. It's literally night and day.
 
The reason why Black gets so much better battery life is because of the OLED Screen. The watch doens't power black and those pixels are shut off. Its the same logic behind using a black wallaper on the X, XS, and Max models. OLED doesn't power black leading to less pixels being pushed.

I'm not a fan of them at all. I have the Noir Hermes and the Noir Numbers face is unreadable its so dim. The AOD with that face is unusable and unless in a dark room the regular face is waaaay to dim imo to be useful.

A lot of my favorite watches have a lot of black in them. Maybe that's why I'm not getting the horrible battery life some S5 people are complaining about in other threads.

I'm the opposite. I set one watch face (Modular) when I got my watch on launch day and haven't changed it since.

The only other one I use is stopwatch, when I want quick access to the stopwatch I'll slide over to that one and hit the complication. If I had a S4 or S5 with the bigger screen then I'd probably have room for the stopwatch complication right on my modular watch face and wouldn't ever change it.

Sadly they all still photos. I understand that Apple doesn't issue SDK for AW faces because these are reserved for exclusive partners like Hermes and Nike - but I find the Apple 'custom' watch faces frustratingly limited.

I do too. There are some faces I'd pay for without hesitation. I wonder if a face store will ever show up.
