I have the discontinued iPhone 12 mini and this will be a huge upgrade for me. Lately, it has been getting so warm, I get a warning that I have to take it inside to cool off. Has the ability to stay reasonably cool improved. The fact it overheats a lot is the main reason other than the discontinuation of the mini series is the reason I am upgrading in September.

Though, if anyone has any suggestion for what I can use to keep my new iPhone cooler, I'd appreciate it. (Yes, I keep it in the shade when I am outside. (Or in my pocket.))

Thank you.

I have the (discontinued?) iPhone 11 Pro Max and won't be upgrading until the iPhone 17 series. The kicker? The iPhone I upgrade to at that time will be the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Perhaps you should have your 12 Mini checked out by Apple? I live in Phoenix and my 11PM has seen three summers so far where the days are all around 110º F. Never had an issue.

Back when my 6s Plus was my primary it endured 45 minute car drives in 110º heat in a car with no functioning AC and windows that could not be rolled down. I still have that phone.

Of course, where you live may be humid so that might be the difference.

Oh, and I also just use my phones as phones. No substitute computer/media device/game console/etc type thing, so that might also be the difference.

How hot is it where you live? I would maybe take it to Apple like @eyoungren suggested, I'd be surprised if it overheats just from using outside as normal in hot weather so it could be a problem with the hardware.

I have special family circumstances that I don't want to add to the stress of one family member in particular. I'm just going to keep monitoring it when I go outside. Find the best shaded spot. It could possibly be because I happened to be charging it outside, too, but the phone was protected by a huge plant so the sun wasn't near it.

I think my iPhone outages my 6s and the heat getting to it was the biggest problem. Yeah, it recalibrated a lot. (I think that is what it's called. When you let your iPhone battery drain so much it shuts down.) Though, I think that had something to do with a version of the iOS. So far with the current version, it hasn't happened.

I actually had the mini because I though my hands couldn't hold a large iPhone, but when I get my mom's iPhone for her when she's doing something else, I have no problem holding it.

I'm looking forward to this.

This is why it’s getting too hot while using it.
Charging
I thought so, I put in the best shaded area when needed. I used to have a portable iPhone charger, if I decide to get one with my new iPhone, it’s going to do the same thing. (Heat up?)

I’m forced to stay in a cool area when it’s really hot. (Anti-seizure meds aren’t fun. Sadly, I’ve picked up a good habit, walking in my area, but when the heat index raises, I can’t go. No one should, obviously.

For reference it was 90 degrees outside the other day and just simply using my 15 PM outside while sitting in a chair was enough to impact it. It wasn’t sitting on a hot surface, wasn’t charging, but simply using it I began to see the screen dim on its own. Within 5 minutes it’d dimmed so much to combat the heat that I could no longer read the screen so I took it inside. Frustrating honestly. They put these screens on that are capable of getting brighter and brighter but it’s not a great feature if the phone itself throttles because it cannot handle external temps.

The biggest thing that heats mind up is having the brightness high. When you’re outside you can’t always help it but when I’m inside I always keep it under half.

Thank you, I'll have to remember that.

Sounds like you just need a battery replacement so that the charge lasts you the full day again. If you recharge any iPhone via power bank outside in hot weather, it’ll overheat. There is no particular fault with your 12 Mini.

If you do plan to upgrade your phone, make sure it’s a regular sized iPhone so that the battery will last longer so that you won’t have to use your power bank during the day.

Even when the whole 12 series was new, I remember a lot of overheating. I had my 12 mini for two years. It got hot, battery was awful, but I loved the form factor. Just don't charge it outside, keep the brightness low, turn off 5G, and try to use it in a cooler environment when possible.

I've seen MagSafe fans. I have no idea how well they work, maybe worth a try too? But, if you’re replacing the phone in two months, probably not really worth it.

I'm planning on getting the smallest of the new models coming out. I'm not going to replace the battery now because what would be the point since I am going to get the new one when it's set for pre-order. (I'm sorry if that last sentence sounded rude.)

Did you mean regular as being non-pro version?

No, I meant that there’s nothing wrong with your 12 Mini, you just needed to replace the old battery if you wanted to make it usable again without having to charge it with a power bank during the day causing it to overheat. Obviously, you won’t be paying all that money if you aren’t planning on keeping the phone though. Since the Mini line has been discontinued I am talking about purchasing a non-SE phone as all the regular and Pro versions have great battery life.

You can’t really go wrong with whatever phone you plan on getting as any iPhone 16 will be a nice upgrade.

I maybe wrong. I never had iPhone 12 since launch day. I got iPhone 12 Pro Max 512GB last year for not lots of money (cracked back, 69% battery health, poor condition. Replaced casing, battery and screen with third party parts).

It could be software optimizations, I never had overheating issues with my iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max. I would say if there is a good deal, iPhone 12 Pro could be cheap option for iPhone and it will be a good one.

I knew what you meant. :) Though, thank you for clarifying just incase I wasn't aware. Hopefully, I can hang on until the pre-sale begins. BTW. I am trying to time it right so when my iPhone comes, the case for it comes on the same day. I forgot what I did when I ordered my mini. Though, I think Amazon Prime has one day delivery.

I'm looking at cases at iPhone on Amazon. (I'm going to order it the day the pre-sale begins.) I keep seeing cases with a ring on the back. I always thought it was to let you know where to place your iPhone if you were using a charging dock. I won't be using one all the time, I've been told it was just there to hang on to. Maybe act like a "kick stand". They don't design iPhone cases with an indicator of where to place your iPhone on the charging dock, right?

I just looked it up, it's supposed to make the area stronger, apparently.

Thank you.

I bought the 12-mini upon Release, and happily used it for well-over a year.

Since the Writing was upon the wall, I upped to a 13-mini.

My perspective (using both, in predominately similar outdoor environments) is that the 12-mini overheated much more than the 13-mini.

A bit subjective, but I have lived with both for a long while.

My current 13-mini is still strong on battery health, and--while it dynamically dims the screen outside--I find that it dims less, remains cooler, and that I'm much-less frustrated with such a thing.

Still, my 12-mini easily lasted me an entire day, working outside in the extreme elements.

That being said, charging at night (in a Conditioned space) is desirable. Also, a mount adjacent to an AC vent in your car may help on-the-daily ;)

Forgive me for giggling when you said "your car", but it could go the other way and mean "a car". Yes, I knew you meant "a car". Since it's summer, the air conditioning is on or the windows are unrolled. I've always have tried to put my iPhones in a cool (or shaded) place. In fact, it got so warm recently, I had the thermometer icon show up on my screen. (That may have happened one other time.)

Do you all get the thermometer icon on your iPhones since most of you have newer iPhones?

BTW. I live in the midwest and the summer heat doesn't get too bad. I mean rarely above eighty degrees. (Though the humidity makes the "feels like" temperature a bit higher.

ha! Giggles are good :)

Still, I hope it's your car, because just installing one in a random car would make it rather inconvenient for you ;)

Only time I ever got the Thermo is if I forgot and left the phone on the dash (or seat), in full-sun.

Have not had that prob with the 13-mini, but I think I've just become smarter about what I do with it.

I don't drive because I have a seizure disorder and my shunt to treat my hydrocephalus could malfunction at the drop of a hat. So, it's best I don't drive. Yes, it isn't fun and I rely on my friends and family to get me from point A to point B.

Ah, gah; well, that definitely makes iy the indefinite article 'a' car :)

I'm planning a back-country trek through the Mojave desert hunting fossils in the next month, and I'll report-back with iP13-mini thermals.

Hopefully, the rental has decent A/C, and the temps are not 45+!
