I'm having issues with ichat

So I am working in Kenya and have been using ichat to communicate with my family in the US. Though we all have gmail accounts we all also have Macs. Recently I've been having trouble using it for either video or audio chat. Even though I am communicating via text chat I keep getting a message when I attempt to initiate a video or audio chat that the other person has not replied and therefore ichat has disconnected or that the other person denied my request. Apparently they are getting the same message. I do have a slow speed internet connection which has disabled my ability to do video chat, but the message then is consistently not enough bandwidth. This is not the message I have been getting. Until recently I have always been able to do audio. I'm not really sure what's going on or what I can do to remedy this issue. Thanks!
