... So that any other Mac/PC can be made to masquerade an Apple TV. This would do away with all the aggro that comes from wanting subsets of your library in different PC's.
 
I hope someone managed to run Linux on the Apple TV, so we can play DivX files on it :D

Linux is not a panacea - certainly not against poor taste for one, and taste is the main (and perhaps these days the only real) 'reason to be' of Apple products. iPodlinux/Rockbox anyone? ;) :rolleyes:

If you're fine with an uglified Linux hodgepodge, there are cheaper media center boxes you can buy to stick your own 3.5" discs in.

perhaps just making the thing have an upgradeable codec database?

honestly, a TV box that cant play all the same vids your computer its connected to can, thats just illogical, stupid and not forward thinking?
