Linux is not a panacea - certainly not against poor taste for one, and taste is the main (and perhaps these days the only real) 'reason to be' of Apple products. iPodlinux/Rockbox anyone?
If you're fine with an uglified Linux hodgepodge, there are cheaper media center boxes you can buy to stick your own 3.5" discs in.
