(Im)patiently waiting for the new iMac

I've currently got a 2008 Mac-mini (2.0Ghz with 2GB RAM and 160GB SSD) in my office and it's grinding to a halt, or at least compared to the 2011 MBA I use when I'm out and about.

Money ready and waiting to spend on a new iMac, but still undecided on specs.

I think I'm swinging toward the 21" with upgraded processor and SDD/HDD and will upgrade the RAM myself but the 27" keeps on tempting me. I currently have a Dell 22" monitor connected to the Mac-mini, so don't think I'd miss the extra desktop space I don't currently have.

Budget is limited to £1800 so do I got for bigger screen and slightly lower spec insides, or maximum spec insides and 21" screen?

Decisions decisions

What would you do?

I would wait until the Ivy Bridge Macs are out so that I can make a buying decision based on facts, not rumours or opinions.

I am in the same position, waiting for the new one's to come out, some say they will be out in May but other say in June, we can never know, it a waiting game :)

hold up un till June, after WWDC, i am sure that by than we will know everything.

Prices tend to always stay the same on all iRefreshes :D - one of the things I love about Apple

+/- £10-20 depending on tax changes etc.

Yeah, should be similar or even lower as the rumors talk about:
- Thiner machine (less metal to be used for body and internal components).
- No HD (maybe only SSD)?
- No DVD drive?

Who knows what it will be, but i hope it will be worth the wait to buy it, arrrrrghhhhh, cant wait for it :)

The base price does stay the same. Option prices can and do change. Also, the biggest question is what will be in the base hardware. Without knowing those changes, it's tough to give good advice.

I can't see how anyone can really answer this question unless you really just want an opinion-based answer. In that case, I'd wait. The new machines could bring something you really don't want and in that case you could always hunt down a refurb or hope for old stock being sold elsewhere.

I echo the other members stating if you can wait then you'll be better off since Ivy Bridge will be released at some point

if you don't wait because of a faster machine, you should definitely wait to get more machine for the money.
I bought the early 2009 model, the top one then. half a year later apple made the 27" imac, and you got the lowest model 27" for half the price I paid with better specs I had. .....now this was after 6 months. NOW, We are talking a year after last model, a lot of new stuff like SSd etc has gone down in price and you should get a LOT more out of your money. Buying the current model is just plain stupid imo.

I'm in the same boat. Waiting for the new 2012 model. I was sold on the 21" (because there is no way anything other than 21" & "27" are going to be offered) but as time goes on I'm more and more tempted by the 27". I have got a new desk and think the bigger screen would look awesome. Just have to decide what to go for top spec 21" or base 27". But as others have said it will depend on what is being offered at each price point before we can decide.
Just hope its this week.

I called Apple Sales earlier as a potential iMac purchaser and asked when they expect the new models. I was told that "it won't be for a while yet". Of course that could be nonsense or it could mean we'll be waiting for 2-3 months until after wwdc

1. They dont know crap/ would not tell you yes soon

2. Months after wwdc. Yeah not happening

3. all imac assumed parts are announced so

4. Mac sales have to jump in june qtr.

True. But any cpu gain over a year later is worth it

Im holding off because of graphics, form factor ,anti glare glass but most of all bang for my $

The only reason I' holding out is for a better GPU. Just sold my 2006 white iMac the other night, and theres empty space on my desk (and in my heart) that needs a new iMac.

Also, not being able to play Diablo 3 until the new iMac is realeased is also a bummer.

Like i always say, there's more to this upgrade than the CPU. As a matter of fact, the CPU is the least of my reasons for waiting. GPU being #1.

Word.

Although my CPU will go from Core 2 Duo to Ivy Bridge (Good!), my GPU will go from AMD 4790 to 7970 (FTW!)

Go for the high end 21.5. It just makes more sense?

I'm buying the highest end 27" possible (excluding larger HDD and a SDD)
