From what i've heard, the Logitech® Z-5500 Digital speakers are top notch for a very reasonable price. Can anyone tell me what they think of them. I am able to get them for $350 Canadian. I'm thinking about using them for my new iMac. Say if i were to buy them could I take them right out of the box and use them with my iMac or do I have to get any other accessories to go along with it. Also, does anyone know if these come with stands because I was watching the video of them on the website and they had stands so I was just curious.

Thanks in advance?

heres the link... http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2177,CONTENTID=9486

can anyone even look at the specs on the website and tell me what they think i.e. good or bad!

Thanks

Looks like a really nice set of speakers. The specs (from the little amount I know about audio speakers and stuff..) look pretty good.. I would get them If I was getting a desktop mac.. (getting macbook pro..) so yeah go for it!

does anyone know if they come with stands? Thats the only way they would work in my room...

does anyone else have an opinion on the quality of speakers. I hope I'm not wasting my money. Its going to be in a 12" by 15" room. Is that too small too have this kind of sound system?

Thanks

If you take a look at the setups thread on this page, post #6695 is a picture of someone that has them in their setup. You might want to try PMing him to get his opinions?

Also, someone asked how he liked them in the thread, and his response was:

They are Logitech Z-5500 (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/pr...ONTENTID=9486). They sound amazing! (to my non-audiophile ears anyway!) I have them set up as 5.1 surround using the optical out of the Mac Pro, movies, music, games all sound great!

edit: also, the kid 05 says he has the speakers. Another person to perhaps contact about them.

One more question, I'm not so much a specialist in electronics but when speakers are satellite equipped, does that mean they are wireless or are they wired?
I'm kind of confused...I'd appreciate if someone could clear this up for me.

I was talking to my older more experience tech brother at dinner and he was saying that these speakers wont be 5.1 surrround sound in my room? Is that true?

They do have the stands on them and the only other thing you will need is a TOS Link cable.

What is a TOS Link cable?
What does it do?

It's an optical fibre, digital audio cable, so you can transfer digital audio directly from a source such as a CD or DVD player without digital to analogue conversion.

So I would basically plug it into my iMac, then the speaker system?

I know that if you search the forums, people have talked about them before. I have them hooked up to my cable box + DVD player and they sound great.

To hook them up to your iMac you will need a digital optical cable. The iMac takes a differently shaped input than the Z-5500's control pod does (I think?). I forget what you call it, but I have some cables that came with adapters (basically, plastic-like clips that fit on the end of it).

The speakers come with feet as pictured on the product page that can also serve as wall mounts, but they do not come with stands, nor can stands be attached to the satellites. Don't attempt to remove the feet, they don't come off and you'll just end up breaking them.

or you could get the Z-5450's which are the same, but the rear satellites are wireless.

I have those, second pair of logitech speakers, these are far better then the previouse. i have it plugged in to my mac pro via optical and my xbox 360 via...uh...red/yellow to green? lol but they are great, better then the 800 i spent on my moms home theater system

yeah i have this set of speaker. it is great. so great that i often turn so loud, especially at midnight. my poor neighbours hate me so much.

I went to best buy, circuit city, and compusa and listened to just about every speaker there is last week.

The logitech z2300 are amazing for being 2.1.

The logitech 5300e are amazing too as well the 5500.

I'm guessing there is a difference, but honestly I didn't notice a ton of difference in sound quality between the z2300 and z5300e when standing up close to them just listening to music. When you hooked them up to a tv/home theater system though, the 5300 and 5500 were surely better for that application. The 2300's though are more than adequate for an awesome pair of desktop speakers for a laptop. They will blow you away.

All three of these systems are definetly THX speakers. They have a very movie theater like sound to them. They sound pretty dang good with music, but some have complained they lack midtone. They surely have the roar and punch you'll want for games and movies though.

If you don't like that movie/gaming sound and want something w/ a very very clean stereo speaker sound the klipsch 2.1 setup may be better for you.

Best thing you can do though is go check them out. You will be suprised. Some of the speakers you think look good will actually suck, and some of the speaker you think look like they will suck actually sound awesome. I almost made the mistake of buying the creative I-trigue speakers and then the JBL creatures. Both of those sucked when next to the logitech and klipsch. I actually decided to skip all of them though and just hook the laptop up to my stereo system which has sound probably comparable to the klipsch 2.1, which is good enough for me right now. The stereo speakers I have now (awia brand) have built in subwoofers and make my room bounce as it is.

The harman/kordan sounsticks have pretty dang good sound to, but I think they are hideous. The klipsch 2.1 are not very pretty either. And by not pretty I mean, not desk pretty, ie. eye sore. The logitech look nice and sound nice. Win, win.

Those speakers are *actually* well good. A friend of mine has some, and they are ace. You might need to reinforce your floor where you place the sub etc. I'm sure you could live in that sub it's so big. Or use it as a chair???

Dan :)
