Why the hell does this happen? I thought I'd get used to it 5 months ago when I first experienced it but now it's just goddamn annoying. It makes my iPhone look like a failure device to others' eyes.

I've never had this problem with mine, and that would be an OS failure rather than a device failure. I take it you've attempted a restore and "set up as new"?
