probaly even had some spelling errors already

Are you even supposed to turn it off

I assume sleep and off is not the same thing.

I click the thingamagenger button or whatever and it comes on.

I figured to turn it on id have to hit the on button

Seriously? Press and hold the power button until you see the shutdown screen..Then swipe right across the red bar to shut down. Yes shutting down when not in use saves battery power.

OP its worth while fully versing yourself in the items manual to enrich your user experience

Begin by locating the iPad's hold button. This button is on the top right-hand corner of the iPad.
Press the hold button for a few seconds, until a red slider appears at the top of the screen that says "slide to power off."
Slide it to the right. (If you don't want to shut it down, tap the "cancel" button at the bottom of the screen.)
You'll see a small wheel and then the screen will go dim. The iPad is now shut off.
