I think I saw one with a Western Digital drive but I could be making this up. If it's anything like the RAM, Apple will choose the brand on their prices at the time of manufacture. In other words, they shop around a bit to get the best deal... I think. :)

I think you have misunderstood me. I want to know what drive Apple use when you configure your imac with a 500gb drive.

Do you mean manufacturer wise? In that case, I believe that Apple (as do most PC manufactureres) use a plethora of different HDD venders (e.g., Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi, etc...). In other words, the type (brand) of HDD in an iMac will normally vary from iMac to iMac. :)

Does this answer your question squirrel? :)

I think you're right, assuming they have the same manufacturer for the 250GB drive which is a Western Digital according to the 20'' iMac.

I have a 500 GB drive in my 20 inch iMac and it's a hitachi, I can get the model number for you, but I'm not at my Mac right now so later today!

I've had two (first one failed) 500GB drives in my 20" iMac and they've both been Hitachi. Model number is: HDS725050KLA360:)
