Howdy guys,
Frequent lurker here, wondering if I could potentially get some helpful advice/help.
I recently got my hands on a 20" iMac from a friend who simply bought a new one when the screen on this one went bad on him.
Thinking he was just lazy and it had a bad screen I went and plugged an adapter into it and hooked it up to an external monitor and powered the machine up to have a looksee.
The second monitor detects, but only displays black. And the main monitor looks very much like the lcd is broken/cracked. I initially thought it was just a bad screen because parts of it looked like my macbook screen did before I replaced it. Until I got the second monitor hooked up and moved the mouse into the second screen space and it had a green tinge around it, and no menus would pop up when I right clicked.
The main monitor looks like this when its powered on.
and my external one looks like this when connected and powered on.
I've been trolling around the interwebs for the past few days looking to see if anything out there sort of matches what I am seeing so I can know where to go from here. So far nothing has really come close. I am guessing it is either the logic board or the display board since everything else seems to be ok but really I do not know.
Things I know for sure about the unit are
*That it hasn't been dropped.
*The hard drive seems to spin up normally and does not make any odd noises or have any vibrations.
*The fans are not going ape when it is on.
*Some of the keyboard shortcuts seem to work(thats how I got it to detect the second monitor).
*It seems to boot fine since the very top part of the main monitor will go the typical startup grey color for a few seconds before disappearing.
Anyone have any ideas/help for a poor lost sod?
P.S. Applogies if I put this in the wrong section. It seemed like a better place to ask than the Basics and Help section.
