I tried following the DIY instructions on Apples website, and other online articles, but they all say remove the bottom 3 phillips screws. Problem is mine has 3 Torx T-8 screws. After removing those three, it wouldn't release so I took out the memory slot door (2 phillips screws) and then it lifted out. Problem #2 the whole lcd panel and sides come out so that just the bezel is left down.

Am I doing something wrong? shouldn't the chassis stay with the bottom part and the lid should open.....exposing the dead hard drive?

Make sure you are looking at the right thread for your imac. The iMac G5 and intel iMac look the same on the outside but are completely different on the inside. If your not sure the G5 has the vertical ports and the intel has the horizontal ports.

Hope this helps
