Imac 20" won't boot when video card installed

My Mid 2007 aluminum iMac suddenly went bad. It started but no chime and display was totally lifeless. So i removed ati 2400 graphics card and boom! It booted well. I wonder if some one has had similar issue? Was it dead gpu or oddly behaving logic board? My assume is video card, but those are rare and expensives.

Then there could not have been a display. So how did you know it was booting?

probably heard the OS start up with the start up sound

Well, but he said "booted well." He can hardly make that assessment from the start-up chime alone.

Actually i heard boot chime and long hdd activity. I might remember wrong, i could also control volume? I tried again but no response for volume buttons, so i assume it won't boot all the way,
