iMac 2002 - Additional memory

I've just noticed that the internal memory differs from that you can add yourself.
The former is 168 pin DRAM whilst the latter is 144 pin Powerbook ram, which increases the cost of an upgrade considerably. A bit of a pain as I recently bought a 512 module for my iMac DV which I won't be able to use.

WHAT ARE APPLE UP TO?!!!!
