I am UK based and happily use RAM upgrades directly from Crucial.com/UK

Have you checked their prices in comparison to your vendor's?
 
Companies make "for Mac" products, like RAM, that are exactly the same as the others, specs and all, but just charge more for them. They assume that a lot of Mac owners aren't well informed and will think that they need something special for their Mac, so they buy the "for Mac" version and pay the vendor more for the exact same product.
