Im sure you all know the problem, I have used the software HDD Fan Control but was wondering is this solution is better. Has anyone tried this?

The external temperature sensor may by OWC indeed does work make sure you purchase the correct one for your iMac model.

Has anyone fitted a 6TB HDD, can a 2011 iMac take such a large capacity drive

I have in later models, There should be no technical reason why it shouldn't work Make sure you do not install a drive that is designed for a NAS.

Just in case you're not aware, there is most likely a unused SATA port present in this machine. With a second cable you can purchase from OWC you can add a 2.5 hard drive or SSD. In this machine you can install up to 3 hard drive's or SSD's 1x 3.5 and 2x 2.5 if you replace the optical drive.

See this thread as it may be somewhat helpful as well https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1778617/

I have actually fitted an SSD and a 3tb HDD using the second port. The optical drive is still in place.

The 3tb HDD has just failed, hence the reason why I wish to find a better method of cooling. I do realise that the HDD may have failed for a multitude of reasons and not because of overheating.

Thanks for the advise.

Excellent most people are unaware of the second port in this model.

What a bummer, The cable may not solve the cooling issues as all it does is allow the computer to handle the fan control itself instead of you setting it manually by using software.

May be taking things externally for large files might be better suited and reduce heat generated by the 3.5 hard drive. Going SSD only internally.

But I personally have a bit of a storage addiction see my signature below. ;)

Thanks for the advise, I don't want an external drive as I guess I am a bit OCD and this defeats the propose of an all in one iMac.

Cheers

Throwing my 2cents in here....

I purchased that DIY kit from OWC... Works like a champ!! I installed a 64GB SSD (just for booting and a few apps) with the kit.. And I replaced the 1TB hard drive with a 2TB drive.. And my optical drive is still connected and fully functional.. I tried installing a 3TB drive but it wouldn't format correctly.. Not sure why?? So I took out the 1TB from my TC and threw the 3TB in there and it works perfectly. Not sure why it didn't in the iMac??

Anyway with that DIY cable, I didn't need any software to control the fans. Everything's been good for the past 2 years!! ;)
