The iMac i7 2011 3.4GHz 4GB RAM is the first Mac I have ever owned/used. I purchased it with a 256GB SSD and 1TBHD. As soon as I received it I purchased 16GB Ram from OWC. A little over a month ago I purchased an OCZ Vertex 4 256 GB SSD and a Seagate GoFelx Desktop Thunderbolt adapter. I now boot from the Vertex which only contains the OS and Apps. All my data is stored on the internal 1TB HD. I clone the Vertex to an external HD via FW and backup (Clone) my data from the internal HD to an external HD via FW.
I plan on getting either LaCie 4TB 2Big thunderbolt external drive or the Western Digital 4TB My Book Dual Thunderbolt drive.

I would like some suggestions how to setup my system if I get one of the two external Thunderbolt drives for the best performance.
