Correct me if I am wrong, but if the iPad has a display of 2048x1536 then this means that no one will be able to design apps for the new iPad and see the whole iPad screen on any of the current iMacs.

The 27" screen display is 2560x1440, you could scroll the iPad screen up and down but would not be able to see the whole thing, you could shrink it but then you would not be viewing it as it would appear on the iPad.

Any thoughts, whether we may get a new iMac because of this?

I think its time for a complete redesign. Getting a much higher res than we have today would be difficult, but you never know. Im exited for the new one.

Well of course there will be new iMac models. There usually is at least once a year.

You'd need a screen about 2304 tall to display 2048x1536. Which would mean a 4096x2304 display for 16:9 aspect ratio. This would be a really expensive display (if the LCD panels were available at that resolution.) I think we may have to live with scrolling for developers. Besides you mealy need to see it on the iPad to know how it really looks at the resolution and pixel density of the target display.

The fact that the new iPad will be higher res than a 27" iMac is absurd. Absurdly awesome.

I just can't wait for a retina display iMac or thunderbolt display. Hopefully we shall see them soon.

Yeah, I would be stoked to see retina in the iMac. I'm not even sure if the appropriate 27" LCD's are in production currently, but heres to hopeful wishing.

A "retina" iMac is probably a long way off. The resolution would be ridiculously huge. Something close to 4000x2400. That would be extremely expensive to make.

Maybe they'll just do a 20" retina cinema display. Should be easier to do than a 27" for the foreseeable future.
