Disregard all, I was able to verify the problem was indeed with my new drive by testing it with another Thunderbolt drive. Luckily, my drive was under warranty.

Today I updated my iMac (2017) with new RAM (24->48 GB) and when I checked system report to confirm the RAM was working (it does), saw there was a system update and so I upgraded to 11.2.2. But now, the Plugable Thunderbolt 3 SSD I use for Time Machine is no longer being seen by the computer. It's plugged in, but not showing up either in finder or the system report. I believe the ports work, because the USB-C hub I have attached to them is working. Any tips? I've done multiple restarts, multiple plugging/unplugging, and even zapped the PRAM twice (is that still a thing?). I know the drive worked this morning because Time Machine shows a backup completed just before the upgrade -- I just don't know which process (RAM or OS update) caused the issue.
