iMac 21.5 Late 09 sound problem

My iMac OS X 10.7.3 has lost sound. First I checked the play/pause button. It was on play. Next I pressed the "volume up" button on top right of keyboard. The bar volume indicator was all white & did not have any little black marks that show up or down. Is this right? Are there any other things I should check to find out what is the problem?
