iMac 24 in. optical drive replacement

My optical drive is not working correctly, it will not read audio CD, but it will mount DVD. I plan to replace it but I may just go with a SSD, and a external Blu-Ray writer. I have watched the videos and read a lot on the web about how to do this. Has anyone here replaced there optical drive?? I have a 24 Inch 2.8 GZ 500 HD. Thanks
