iMac 27" 2011-Target Display Mode

I know it's currently not possible to use the 2011 iMac in Target Display mode, however does anyone know wether Apple could theoretically enable this via a Firmware update or is it a physical inability?

It is possible, but only with other thunderbolt enabled Macs

As I thought, what would be great if you could use it as a monitor for, for instance, a Windows based gaming rig.

If the Windows gaming rig supported Thunderbolt it might work.
