Lately my iMac would make a loud static or electric popping sound and would freeze up and restart. Its a late 2015 3.2ghz model with ram upgraded to 32GB and I added an apple 512gb flash ssd. It happens usually once a month but multiple times on the same day then won't happen again for awhile.

For the first time just now, the static popping sound kept on going until I forced shutdown it by holding the power button. Every time before that it would just make a pop sound once and freeze. Anyone have any idea what's going on or happening?

Do you still have the original RAM? You should try it with that for a while and see if it still occurs.
I've had a few iMacs in the past make really loud static noises which I had to unplug to get them to stop - and they all had the same issue, which was the RAM.

Hello John: Did you ever solve the problem because it's happening to me whenever I'm using Final Cut Pro. 2019 iMac 27". I upgraded to latest version of FCP and also am running the newest Mac OS, Sonoma. I thought it might be one of my external drives, so I moved all my media to a different one. Same issue: loud cracking sound out of right speaker only, then computer restarts without my doing anything. I see someone suggested bad RAM. I've got 40gb and had zero problems for almost 4 years. Maybe I'll pull out all the RAM except the original Apple brand and see what happens.
