Hi!

Today when I started my iMac 27" 2017 I was met with the sound of failing fan bearings. It was perfectly quiet 10 hours ago. My Apple Care and consumer protection ended about 5 months ago. Why do these things always happen after the end of warranty?

Anyways, I now need to replace the fan. I have been looking for any indication of what it would cost to have Apple replace it, but found nothing. My closest Apple Store is too far away so I would have to send it in. Or, I could replace it myself but I can't seem to find a genuine Apple fan from a trusted source (no surprise there). Ideally I would do it myself as I need my Mac on a daily basis.

Anyone that has had this done and know an approximate cost? Or know of a place where I could get a genuine fan to replace myself?

The fan itself cost like 50-60$. The most cost is labor. If you have assembly skills, you can try it at your own with ifixit guide. But my assumption is like 300$ at certified shop.

Sounds about right. I can for sure do it myself but Apple doesn't sell OEM parts and don't allow anyone else to do so either so it's getting the part that's the problem. I have taken apart and reassembled much more complex stuff so I'm confident in my ability to do the work myself.

All I can find on eBay are what is claimed to be refurbished OEM products and brands I've never heard of before.

I heard somewhere that fans for apple are produced by Delta. So if you see that brand should be ok.

I have had Delta fans in several of my Macs so that makes sense.

BookYard are nice to buy from - obviously depending on if the product is a fair price, since I find them notorious for having high prices for their parts.

Thanks for the tip! I'd rather put a brand new one in if I go through all the trouble but I guess that isn't an option with Apple. This is an area where I really appreciate the PC market, but that's about the only thing so here I am :D
