Two days ago I started to notice weird noise coming from my iMac 27" 2020. Something like a quiet non-periodical rattling / clicking noise. It was quite impossible to locate from what part of the computer is this noise coming. I thought it might be a power supply, bad power socket. I have tried SMC / NVRAM reset, updating to latest version of macOS, but it was somehow still there. Not all the time, not immediately after boot, but it was there sometimes. After few hours of investigation I found out that when I play some video / music and turn off the sound (but the music / video is still playing in background), the noise is gone, so it might be a software problem.

Here is my recording of the noise = if you not focus on the background noise, you will hear something what sounds like somebody is typing on keyboard = but that is the noise I'm talking about.

Any ideas? Does anybody have a similar problem?

Thanks.

Could it potentially be the fan? Either way I could take this to get looked at by Apple if possible.

Very very rare have I seen a speaker faulty in any of the slim line iMacs - closest I can think of is on a 2019 which had interference with the speaker, however this was logic board side.

Thank you for your reply. I was playing with it a lot since yesterday and the thing it: the sound stops when I for example increase the brightness, play video... it looks like when the computer is consuming more power, the sound stops. That's so weird.

Wish I had an Apple store in my country. There are only Premium Resellers and solving this kind of "non-visible" problem with them is a pain and usually ends up without solution. I guess I just have to live with it.
