Yesterday I placed my order for the 2017 IMac 4.2 i7, 8 gig ram, 2 TB Fusion, Today after much consideration I cancelled the order. The reason for canceling was the Fusion drive. Of course we all want to fastest we can get and for me also long term reliability and I’m just not sure you can get that with a spinning drive.
Now I’m stuck trying to decide how much SSD memory to order with the IMac. I’m going to be using the computer mainly for photo editing.
I’m wavering between 512 and 1TB, but the price difference between the two is mind boggling.
I know at some point I’ll need more storage then 512.
Would it be better to pay up and get the 1TB or get should I get the 512 and later on buy a external SSD. (Costco has the SanDisk 500GB Portable Solid State Drive for $149).
What would/ did you do or advice would you give?
Thanks

I would go with 512gb f it can take all your apps and whatever you are currently working on, then use externals for storage, you might be best off with hot swappable raid array then you just put in whatever drives you need when you need them.

I agree with Samuelsan2001. Get as much internal as you can afford without it putting you in a financial bind. Then add the fastest, largest external SSD you can. I'm looking at the Samsung T5 line, 2TB, to use as my "data" drive for near-term storage of 4k video files and RAW photos. As it fills up I'll age them off to my NAS RAID (Synology) but I'll try and keep as much of my data local as possible.

Easy advice:
Get the 512gb SSD. Save some money.
Add EXTERNAL storage later on if you "need more".
