I'm planning on buying a 27" iMac for development stuff with an SSD, and buying my own RAM upgrade because lol Apple's ram prices.

My question is in the processor. I've used some of the higher-end i7s in the past and they were always pretty good in Windows. I even had an i7 in a MacBook Pro, but the laptop form factor was too inconvenient to use for long periods (even with an external monitor). I've heard, though, that the i9s thermal-throttle pretty hard to the point that they're not as useful as they could be.

6 cores of decently fast i5 seems pretty good (and affordable) to me, and I'm leaning with either the base model i5 or the mid-range i5 right now. Budget isn't really a concern at the moment; I've got most of the money saved up already and would only need to wait a bit longer if anyone's input makes me jump to an i9.

Does anyone have any experience or advice to offer with this?

Compilers are getting better with multi threading but single core performance is still important.

An i5 is adequate. An i9 will be better.

(I don’t have benchmarks on hand but you could google “i5 vs i9 compile benchmarks iMac” - even if it’s not the same year model you’ll get a decent idea of the performance increase)
