iMac 27" in sleep mode

Do I need to have the power strip on all the time if I put my iMac 27" in sleep mode? Or, can I shut it off and then turn it on again later, and wake up the iMac?
 
Desktop computers like the iMac don't have an internal battery, like a notebook. If you remove power, it will shut down.
