I upgraded from an i5-4670 to an i7-4771 and reapplied thermal paste and everything seems to be working fine except now the fan speed is up. using mac fan control, i usually sat at 1200 rpm with the old cpu, but now, it sits at about 1700 rpm. what is causing this?

If temps look normal, reset SMC.

If temps look higher than expected, check activity monitor CPU. Depending on your install spotlight could be reindexing and other processes running. I would wait for spotlight, if its something else, reset SMC.

Might as well reset NVRAM as well.

Resetting SMC and NVRAM didn't change the fan speeds. I put the i5-4670 back into the system and the fan is still running about 1700 rpm. The CPU was the only upgrade I made, so I am not sure what is causing the fan to run louder than normal. I used Kyronaut the CPU and GPU, and Arctic thermal pad 1.5mm for the VRAM. I often read about how if the temperature sensor isn't working, the fan will go full speed, but my fans aren't going full speed, it's going 1700/2640, so I am not sure what is going on.

Here are my temperatures from Macs Fan Control 1.4.12 (iMac14,2)
