Hi guys I received my very first Imac 5 days ago, it's a 27" model with i5, HDD 1TB + SSD 256GB, 1GB Radeon 6970m + 12GB RAM (8GB ordered aftermarket on the crucial online store) and I wanted to share some thoughts on it.
In these days I've been really enjoying my Imac, it works perfectly with all the application I need (Lightroom, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Office 2011) the only things I noticed are some small "issues" which honestly are not that relevant.
The first thing I did when I turned on the Imac for the first time was doing the Yellow tinge test: this was the main concern I had when I decided to purchase the Imac, because I do a lot of photoediting and the "yellow tinge issue" could have been a serious problem.
Well...the result of the test was pretty good as you can see by these 2 pictures:
The screen uniformity is pretty good, I can't see any yellow tint in the corners; I just found 1 stuck red pixel in the upper right corner which actually it's invisible.
If you look closer to these pictures you'll notice a light shadow line in the lower part of the screen, it starts from the left side. Honestly you can notice it only if you watch closely that part of the screen; but during photo editing sessions I haven't experienced any problem with that; I guess it's really better to have a little shadow like that than a yellow tint corner.
The other thing I noticed when using my Imac is the HD noise; as storage disk I got a western digital 1TB which is known to be kind of noisy (at least reading all the other topics in this forum and the apple support forum). Well...you can hear the disk working, it's true, but I guess that is a normal thing.
I've been using (and I'm still using) a pc workstation and I had a lot of different disks (Samsung spinpoint F1, F3, WD Caviar blue...) and all of them were noisy; also the WD Green 2TB which I have installed in an external case (and it's now connected to the imac via FW800) and which is supposed to be a silent disk, it's noisy. Probably the Seagate would have been more silent than the WD but...who cares! ...when I want to, I go to finder, eject the WD and the Imac suddenly becomes deadly silent so...I'm okay with that
One last thought about the monitor: usually it's known that the Imac monitor it's not very indicated for serious photoediting because of the glare screen, because it's not a wide-gamut screen and so on...well honestly for me that I can control the ambience light in my room I've got to say that I'm really enjoying it, I edited 40-50 pictures in the last 5 days, I printed a couple of them and I'm really satisfied with it.
