Imac 27inch

I have just bought a new iMac 27inch and have found that it doesn't allow me to put any folders onto my desktop and I have no hard drive icon on my desktop. Is there anyone out there who can help me resolve these problems?

Finder > Preferences >

Perhaps you don't have the right permission to write. Go to finder, right click on "desktop" select, "get info" now go all the way down and see how the permissions are done and whether you have the permission to read and write to it.
