Okay so I’ve got this 4K Dell monitor that I want to use in conjunction with an iMac, the question that I’m faced up against is that I want to be sure that the iMac I do purchase will be able to support a 4K monitor at 60hz.

What would be extremely helpful to know is what year did Apple start supporting external 4K monitors at 60hz for the iMac models.

Thank you very much

Check everyma.com for specs on specific older iMac models. This is from the Apple Store’s specs on the latest 21.5 inch iMacs.

Aside from the built in display iMac will support the following display configurations:

One 5120‑by‑2880 (5K) external display at 60Hz with support for 1 billion colors, or

Two 3840-by-2160 (4K UHD) external displays at 60Hz with support for 1 billion colors, or

Two 4096‑by‑2304 (4K) external displays at 60Hz with support for millions of colors
