Note: My main question is at the bottom in Bold
For starters, here's a reference to an Apple forum post dealing with this as well: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3152729?start=0&tstart=0
So, I purchased a ZOOM R16 Recorder:Interface:Controller and then purchased an iMac 5,2 Intel Core2 Duo w/ OS X 10.6.8 to install the copy of Cubase LE 5 that comes with the R16.
Installing Cubase LE 5 went just fine. No problems with Cubase LE 5 so far (but that's not saying much because I haven't been able to use it the way it was intended, as packaged w/ the R16 being the controller interface for Cubase).
The problem I'm having is with the R16 Drivers & OS X 10.6.8
I'll walk you through the install & pairing of the R16 & point out the problem:
For starters, the guide provided is how to connect the R16 to a computer running Mac OS X and to enable audio input/output or control R16 as control surface for Cubase LE 5. The installation description uses Mac OS X v10.5 as an example. Not OS X 10.6.8.
After Cubase is installed, the next step is installing the R16 Drivers. This is where it gets foggy for me. Running the installer goes fine. It gets all the way to "installed successfully" then a box pops up and says that there was a problem with the install.......huh? Next comes pairing the R16 to the iMac.
First, press the "USB" labeled button on the R16. Done. Second, select "audio interface" and press the "enter" button on the R16. Done. Third, select the setting option "[continue]" and press the "enter" button on the R16. Done. Now connect the USB cable to the R16. Done. (at this point, the directions state that the light next to the [DEVICE] port flashes....that doesn't happen in my case. In my case it's on solidly. Not flashing. Then the screen on the R16 should have the words "AUDIO INTERFACE" flashing. It is doing this properly). Plug in the USB cable to the iMac. Now "INTERFACE" flashes indicating that the device has been connected properly. This doesn't happen in my case. In my case "AUDIO INTERFACE" is still flashing. Perhaps the directions have a typo and they mean "AUDIO INTERFACE" not just the single word "INTERFACE." Highly plausible as this is a Japanese machine, meaning that it's a translation from Japanese. Happens all the time. Anyway, moving on...
Now, the directions state that I am to: open the "Applications" folder on the iMac, then the "Utilities" folder, and double click "Audio MIDI Setup." Done. However, the window that pops up for me doesn't look like what is shown in the directions. The directions show a window that is similar to what I'll try and represent via typing:

Hopefully, that made sense. I used ( & ) to represent drop down menu fields & [^] to represent the button that opens the drop down menu.
I've attached a photo of what pops up for me.

As you can see from the attachment, it's not the same. I'm assuming this is why the error popped up after the "successful" install of the driver?
Then, when you open Cubase, the directions tell you to access the "Devices" menu, select "Device Setup..." and click "VST Audio System." Done. Once that window opens, under VST Audio System, you're supposed to make sure it's designated "ZOOM R16 Driver," but it's not there. Click the drop down for the ASIO Driver and all that exists is "Built-in whatever" no ZOOM Driver. So it didn't work.
So here's my question! Since I've heard that everything works just fine on OS X 10.6.7 according to the forum on apple's website that I linked to at the beginning of this post, should I find a way to roll back OS X 10.6.8 to OS X 10.6.7.....my iMac did not come with the recovery disk, so I don't have a copy of it. Should I use BootCamp and install Windows XP SP2 (I do have a copy of that)? Would that work? Seeing how it's a driver issue, I wonder if using a Windows operating system through Mac hardware would even resolve the issue. Any ideas?
