I recently purchased a used iMac 6.1. It came without cd's.

After setting it up, I realized I wasn't given the administrator password. The seller was the spouse of an upset divorced husband and he has refused to supply the password to her, so she can't get it to me.

What can I do? As I mentioned, I don't have the operating system CD's.

Thanks for any insight at all.

Is it running Leopard? There's a simple fix you can do with single-user mode if that's the case.

thanks for the response.

I can't determie the name of the OS. There is something about Kernal: Darwin 8.9.1

If you can log in at all, go to the Apple Menu/About This Mac. It'll say there.

this is what I see. no mention of Leapord.

So I guess I have Tiger.

Should I purchase an OS disk to re-set the password? If so, should it be tiger or leopard or new something??

If I am forced to use the OS disk to re-set the password, will I lose all the installed software?

Thanks for everybody's help here.

I am a new mac user - formally PC - love the machine, I wish I knew how important the password was befor I purchased the machine.
