Why does the iMac use the offer the rMBP GPU in only half the memory?

Wouldn't it be simpler to just offer all 750m's as 2GB?

Apple have always done it this way (by giving the maxed out MBP the GPU of the high end iMac, but with double the video memory). From what I have found, you will struggle to notice a difference as if you are using more than 1Gb of VRAM, the GPU is not meant for you anyway. I have tried a few games on my iMac's 750m, and I appear to get around the same FPS as that of the 2gb version (and in some cases a larger FPS, but that's maybe because I am gaming at 1080p, rather than retina).
