I have an old iMac A1224 where the hard drive has died. I have a new SSD drive for it, but can't determine how to boot or load an OS on it. I have both another Mac and a Windows PC, so I could use either of those to do what I need to do. I just don't know what "it" is. I do not have the original media. I would love to somehow load a bootable image directly to the hard drive if that's an option, and then just install the drive, and boot up. Looking forward to a smart person's answer.

The best way out may be to purchase a downloadable copy of OS Mountain Lion, OS X.8, from Apple on your other Mac. Burn to an +8GB thumb drive, boot from it on your mid 2009 iMac, format the drive Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and after install update via the AppStore to El Capitan OS X.11, the last system your 2009 iMac can run.

I tried this. I have the USB drive loaded and bootable. I cannot get my MAC to see the USB drive when booting and holding the Option key.

Hi, I have had the pain of scanning all the iMac forums to find out how to reload El Capitain on a 2007 iMac A1224. The solution was to reset the date. I tried for two weeks to do the auto online download. Then I read one thread that said the date had to be changed to 021214152015. I did this and it reloaded straight away, I am surprised that more experienced MAC people do not seem to pass this on or perhaps it is assumed the MACers knowledge?
