I was using an iMac 21.5" under Catalina (10.15.6) when it suddenly started to act strangely. In fact I lost control completely: open applications started quitting by themselves, I could not interact with anything, System Preferences (it was open) reported an error, Safari started opening a series of new empty tabs, Exposé/Mission control were activated without touching anything, the display was dimmed. I forced a restart and now everything is back to normal.
Is there any chance that all this is due to malware? Or is it a known issue with Catalina? I am using Mac OS X from the days of 10.1 and this is the first time that I see anything similar. The only "suspicious" thing I ever did was a couple of weeks ago when I installed the patch provided by this page (deleted soon after). I had to bypass the macOS security for the new binary and the accompanying library, but everything worked fine without any strange behaviour.
