Hello, I’m looking to get an iMac but sounds like there might be a new one coming out in the fall? Does anyone know what the current iMac would likely drop to once the new one comes out? Trying to determine what would be the better deal. I qualify for the education discount and they are offering a $150 gift card with the purchase of current iMac but that offer isn’t going to last long.

Thanks

If you’re talking about the Robert rumored 27” iMac Apple won’t drop the price of the 24”.

If you’re talking about a possible M2 iMac that would replace the M1 version so no price drop. The only reason they kept the M1 Air along with the M2 was because of the redesign. The 24” iMac has already had its redesign so it will just get an upgraded processor.

I mean take anything someone says here with a grain of salt because no one knows what Apple will do but I don’t see them keeping an M1 version of the iMac when it goes to M2 unless it’s just like a really base model like the one we have with only two ports.

Rumors of a new 27" (or larger) iMac are just too "nebulous" right now.
Too "unformed" yet to give a clearer idea of what may be coming.

So... unless you're willing to wait -- quite possibly keep waiting a good while -- your choices are:
- buy the 24" version
or
- buy a 2020 Intel version (probably Apple refurbished).

Take a really good look at a base model Mac Studio.
Add the display of your choice (I WOULD NOT buy the Studio Display).

Hmm, the 24” iMac is not a bad deal, especially with the education discount and a 150 dollar gift card. Of course there may be an M2 24” iMac later this year or early next, pretty solid guess but who knows what that might do to prices.

Except for phones, Apple normally doesn't discount the older version. But you should eb able to find discounts from other sources once the new iMac is out. Apple hasn't released an M2 Mac mini yet so that might be the desktop coning out this year with the iMac next year. Or maybe Apple is going to release a larger M2 iMac Pro this year to sell in addition to the M1 24" iMac.

Of course if you wait until this fall and there is no release, then the rumors will probably tell you to wait until the spring for the new 24" iMac.

So is it worth waiting? You can compare the M1 and M2 13" MBPs to see if an M2 24" iMac will offer anything compelling enough to wait because the design will stay the same. If you were planning on getting one with a 256GB drive and using external storage, you may want the M1 with its faster drive.
