I am currently in the market for a new set up and I am wondering if the iMac could handle Modo doing product design with no animation

Yes, the iMac can handle modo 40 and 501, though the GPU is not a professional OpenGL GPU (like the Fire or Quadro or the former 3Dlabs products), you might see some drawbacks if you have a really complex scene.
