I have an early 2009 iMac, and several games I've played on it (Heroes of Newerth and Rust) came with a built-in Voice Chat. For some reason the system can't pick up my voice very well when I try to talk, and people can hardly hear me unless I'm about 5 inches away from the screen. I've tried adjusting volume controls, but that didn't help much.

Would it be possible to use something like a 3.5mm cable with mic (similar to what Beats has), and plug it into my headphones and iMac's headphone jack to get it to work as a mic, or am I limited to just a USB mic? I currently don't have the regular Apple earbuds to test this with, and such a cable would probably be cheaper to buy for testing purposes. I've noticed that these cables have 3 plastic rings on their end like the Apple's earbuds.
