imac and skype

I have an imac g3 running mac osx 10.3.9 and have recently installed skype for the mac,having bought a skype phone. However the sound is terribly distorted and so the phone is virtually useless. I then bought a mic which I plugged into the mic socket but no joy either.
The cd player is ok so i guess the sound card is working ok.

Any idea how to solve this problem?
